August 2023

August is peak summer garden time, with loads of produce coming in. That means we eat great, and can a lot! In the garden we still have our pumpkins, winter squash, field corn, and fall potatoes, but our canning is now all done for the year – it takes a tremendous effort! All told, we canned 21 quarts of whole tomatoes, 35 quarts of pickles, 60 quarts of salsa, 55 quarts of potatoes, 10 quarts of sauerkraut, 30 quarts of tomato sauce, and 15 pints of pickled okra.

We decided to treat Sam and Paige to an early birthday present, taking them to their first big league game. The Braves hosted the Angels, and we had a great time around the ballpark beforehand.

August is also raspberry time for the variety we grow, and they are producing very well this year. We had a ton of blackberries coming in as well, but the birds cleaned us out.
We’re also trying to save as many seeds as we can this year.
